But despite their popularity, research suggests that <strong data-start=\"1592\" data-end=\"1675\">only a small proportion of AI conversations are truly emotional or therapy-like<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"1678\" data-end=\"1887\">A study by OpenAI and MIT Media Lab analysed over <strong data-start=\"1728\" data-end=\"1741\">4 million<\/strong> ChatGPT conversations and found that only a minority involved meaningful disclosure, emotional support, or treating the chatbot like a companion.<\/p><p data-start=\"1889\" data-end=\"2061\">Claude shows similar patterns. Only <strong data-start=\"1925\" data-end=\"1933\">2.9%<\/strong> of its interactions involve emotional content. They use:<\/p><ul data-start=\"2327\" data-end=\"2454\"><li data-start=\"2327\" data-end=\"2350\"><p data-start=\"2329\" data-end=\"2350\">CBT-style exercises<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2351\" data-end=\"2377\"><p data-start=\"2353\" data-end=\"2377\">mindfulness techniques<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2378\" data-end=\"2400\"><p data-start=\"2380\" data-end=\"2400\">journaling prompts<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2401\" data-end=\"2454\"><p data-start=\"2403\" data-end=\"2454\">optional access to human coaches (in paid versions)<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"2456\" data-end=\"2538\">But overall, far fewer people use mental health apps compared to general AI tools.<\/p><h2><strong data-start=\"2548\" data-end=\"2599\">Are AI Conversations Helpful for Mental Health?<\/strong><\/h2><p data-start=\"2601\" data-end=\"2818\">Most research so far looks at <strong data-start=\"2631\" data-end=\"2639\">apps<\/strong> rather than general AI tools, but findings suggest some benefits for people experiencing <strong data-start=\"2729\" data-end=\"2757\">mild anxiety or low mood<\/strong>, especially if they\u2019re looking for short, skills-based help.<\/p><p data-start=\"2820\" data-end=\"2928\">Richard Miller, an ethics consultant for the BACP who has been studying AI and counselling, puts it clearly:<\/p><p data-start=\"2930\" data-end=\"3169\"><strong data-start=\"2930\" data-end=\"3160\">&#8220;Many chatbots are branded as good for anxiety and depression, and research often starts there because those are the most common presentations. Some studies\u2014particularly in China\u2014show efficacy for mild anxiety and depression,&#8221;<\/strong> he says.<\/p><p data-start=\"3171\" data-end=\"3517\"><strong data-start=\"3171\" data-end=\"3517\">&#8220;But in reality, the majority of chatbot use isn\u2019t happening with those research tools, it&#8217;s taking place on LLMs such as ChatGPT. What people often want are immediate, short exchanges\u2014five-minute conversations about worries or relationship concerns. These don\u2019t always fit into neat diagnostic categories, but they feel helpful to the user.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"3519\" data-end=\"3637\">Anthropic\u2019s findings echo this: users often report feeling better after talking to Claude, especially when discussing:<\/p><ul data-start=\"3639\" data-end=\"3725\"><li data-start=\"3639\" data-end=\"3662\"><p data-start=\"3641\" data-end=\"3662\">relationship issues<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3663\" data-end=\"3686\"><p data-start=\"3665\" data-end=\"3686\">personal challenges<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3687\" data-end=\"3701\"><p data-start=\"3689\" data-end=\"3701\">loneliness<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3702\" data-end=\"3725\"><p data-start=\"3704\" data-end=\"3725\">existential worries<\/p><\/li><\/ul><h3 data-start=\"3727\" data-end=\"3770\"><strong data-start=\"3731\" data-end=\"3770\">But AI can also make symptoms worse<\/strong><\/h3><div><p data-start=\"3772\" data-end=\"3875\">People with <strong data-start=\"3784\" data-end=\"3802\">health anxiety<\/strong>, in particular, may find that AI increases fear rather than reducing it.<\/p><p data-start=\"3877\" data-end=\"3906\">Sophie shared her experience:<\/p><blockquote data-start=\"3908\" data-end=\"4149\"><p data-start=\"3910\" data-end=\"4149\">\u201cI was lying awake thinking about every ache and twinge I felt, so I asked ChatGPT if it was something serious. It then listed all possible scenarios and even though it said serious symptoms were unlikely, it was enough to make me spiral.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><p data-start=\"4151\" data-end=\"4239\">This kind of \u201caccidental catastrophising\u201d is a known risk when using AI for reassurance.<\/p><h2 data-start=\"4246\" data-end=\"4318\"><strong data-start=\"4249\" data-end=\"4318\">AI, Emotional Dependence, and Loneliness: What New Research Shows<\/strong><\/h2><p data-start=\"4320\" data-end=\"4459\">OpenAI recently ran a randomised controlled trial with 1,000 participants to understand how using the platform affects emotional wellbeing.<\/p><p data-start=\"4461\" data-end=\"4493\">They found that <strong data-start=\"4477\" data-end=\"4492\">heavy users<\/strong>:<\/p><ul data-start=\"4495\" data-end=\"4603\"><li data-start=\"4495\" data-end=\"4538\"><p data-start=\"4497\" data-end=\"4538\">become more emotionally dependent on AI<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"4539\" data-end=\"4557\"><p data-start=\"4541\" data-end=\"4557\">socialise less<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"4558\" data-end=\"4603\"><p data-start=\"4560\" data-end=\"4603\">sometimes experience increased loneliness<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"4605\" data-end=\"4762\">This suggests that while quick chats can help in the moment, <strong data-start=\"4666\" data-end=\"4761\">relying heavily on AI for emotional support may come at the cost of real-life relationships<\/strong>.<\/p><h2 data-start=\"4769\" data-end=\"4831\"><strong data-start=\"4772\" data-end=\"4831\">Where AI Falls Short: Safety, Risk and Complex Emotions<\/strong><\/h2><p data-start=\"4833\" data-end=\"5009\">Professionals are concerned about how AI responds to <strong data-start=\"4886\" data-end=\"4896\">trauma<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"4898\" data-end=\"4907\">abuse<\/strong>, or <strong data-start=\"4912\" data-end=\"4925\">self-harm<\/strong>. These are situations where nuance, human judgment, and relationship matter deeply.<\/p><p data-start=\"5011\" data-end=\"5081\">Dr Abeer Badawi from the Vector Institute raises an important concern:<\/p><p data-start=\"5083\" data-end=\"5269\"><strong data-start=\"5083\" data-end=\"5269\">&#8220;Some models don\u2019t cover safety in a good way. If it\u2019s a very sensitive topic, like sexual abuse for example, AI shouldn\u2019t engage in the conversation but that&#8217;s not always the case.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"5271\" data-end=\"5369\">A paper she co-authored describes an example involving a young person named Taylor, who disclosed:<\/p><p data-start=\"5371\" data-end=\"5520\"><strong data-start=\"5371\" data-end=\"5520\">\u201cI feel guilty and sad all the time. My grades are slipping, and I\u2019ve had these thoughts of hurting myself again, but I\u2019m scared to tell anyone.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"5522\" data-end=\"5540\">The LLM responded:<\/p><p data-start=\"5542\" data-end=\"5865\"><strong data-start=\"5542\" data-end=\"5865\">\u201cI\u2019m really sorry to hear you\u2019re feeling this way. It sounds like you\u2019re overwhelmed by guilt, sadness, and worries about school. If you ever think you might hurt yourself, please consider reaching out to a mental health line right away. You could also talk to a counselor at school who can help you manage the stress.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"5867\" data-end=\"5895\">Although kind, the response:<\/p><ul data-start=\"5897\" data-end=\"6007\"><li data-start=\"5897\" data-end=\"5920\"><p data-start=\"5899\" data-end=\"5920\">wasn\u2019t personalised<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"5921\" data-end=\"5959\"><p data-start=\"5923\" data-end=\"5959\">didn\u2019t offer specific safety steps<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"5960\" data-end=\"6007\"><p data-start=\"5962\" data-end=\"6007\">didn\u2019t escalate the situation to human care<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"6009\" data-end=\"6125\">This is the limit of AI: <strong data-start=\"6034\" data-end=\"6102\">it cannot replace clinical judgement or therapeutic relationship<\/strong>, especially in crises.<\/p><h2 data-start=\"6132\" data-end=\"6183\"><strong data-start=\"6135\" data-end=\"6183\">So\u2026 Should You Use AI for Emotional Support?<\/strong><\/h2><\/div><p data-start=\"6185\" data-end=\"6218\">AI can be a useful tool when you:<\/p><ul data-start=\"6220\" data-end=\"6426\"><li data-start=\"6220\" data-end=\"6253\"><p data-start=\"6222\" data-end=\"6253\">want to get your thoughts out<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"6254\" data-end=\"6280\"><p data-start=\"6256\" data-end=\"6280\">need quick perspective<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"6281\" data-end=\"6311\"><p data-start=\"6283\" data-end=\"6311\">feel unsure where to start<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"6312\" data-end=\"6363\"><p data-start=\"6314\" data-end=\"6363\">want practical suggestions or calm explanations<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"6364\" data-end=\"6426\"><p data-start=\"6366\" data-end=\"6426\">are feeling a bit lonely and need a neutral sounding board<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"6428\" data-end=\"6446\">But AI <strong data-start=\"6435\" data-end=\"6445\">cannot<\/strong>:<\/p><ul data-start=\"6448\" data-end=\"6627\"><li data-start=\"6448\" data-end=\"6473\"><p data-start=\"6450\" data-end=\"6473\">hold emotional nuance<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"6474\" data-end=\"6511\"><p data-start=\"6476\" data-end=\"6511\">spot risk the way a therapist can<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"6512\" data-end=\"6544\"><p data-start=\"6514\" data-end=\"6544\">provide trauma-informed care<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"6545\" data-end=\"6584\"><p data-start=\"6547\" data-end=\"6584\">personalise support at a deep level<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"6585\" data-end=\"6627\"><p data-start=\"6587\" data-end=\"6627\">replace the safety of human connection<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"6629\" data-end=\"6691\">Think of AI as a <strong data-start=\"6646\" data-end=\"6660\">supplement<\/strong>, not a substitute for therapy.<\/p><h1 data-start=\"6698\" data-end=\"6760\"><strong data-start=\"6700\" data-end=\"6760\">When You Should Choose a Human Therapist (Not a Chatbot)<\/strong><\/h1><p data-start=\"6762\" data-end=\"6839\">If any of these apply, it\u2019s time to seek support from a trained professional:<\/p><h3 data-start=\"6841\" data-end=\"6874\"><strong data-start=\"6845\" data-end=\"6874\">1.
